Ever since I was a young boy I have always been fascinated with coins.
I remember asking my father to take me to the coin store so I could go through their big bins of coins and pick out a few that I liked. I think fondly of the time I bought my first Walking Liberty Half-dollar. What a beautiful coin it was! When I was twelve, I traveled to Austria, Switzerland, and Germany with the Delaware Valley Symphonic Band. There, I bought proof sets of coins from each of those countries.
Silver coins were always my favorite. I would watch the news and wait to see the current price of silver (this was well before the internet). I always knew silver would be worth more than the $5-$6 it was worth back in the 1980’s.
Fast forward to the early 2000s, when I became a more serious collector. I became interested in the history of the older coins and the reason they produced them. In fact, one of my favorite coins is a 1797 Draped Bust Dollar made from Thomas Jefferson’s personal silver. As a young nation, the U.S. Mint was low on silver. Jefferson donated his Spanish silver to make these Draped Bust Dollars. Only 7,776 of these dollars were minted that year. For comparison, they made over 340 Million Washington Presidential Dollars in 2007. Think about it! Only 7,776 dollar coins were produced for a whole country. I was lucky enough to buy one that has been around for over 225 years. I can only imagine whose hands this coin passed through!
Coins are something I’ve loved for a long time. I hope that you’ll consider me when you sell your coin collections!
